Volunteer Marine Rescue Southport (VMR) is the only 24 hour / 7 day Marine Rescue Squadron in the greater Gold Coast region. The members of this Organisation contribute approximately 70,000 unpaid man hours annually.
We provide a continual safety listening watch on all emergency and general marine radio frequencies, providing mariners with up-to-date weather and tidal reports, boating safety information and a vessel logging service, allowing them to register details of their voyages. VMR Southport also assists the Qld Water Police with marine search and rescue operations, and the Qld Ambulance Service with transport of Emergency Paramedics to marine medical activations and as part of our role in the Community First Responder Program. We also assist the boating public with towing of broken-down vessels, battery jump starts, pump outs of sinking vessels and the ungrounding of vessels. VMR Southport undertakes more than 800 marine rescue activations annually.
VMR Southport has an operational area ranging from the Qld / NSW border at Point Danger, through to the Jumpinpin Bar (Southern Moreton Bay) in the north. This includes the myriad of canals, inlets, and tributaries of the Gold Coast Broadwater and Nerang and Coomera Rivers. This area extends 30 nautical miles seaward of the coastline. In marine search and rescue events this area can be extended.
VMR Southport members are continually active in fundraising and attend Boat shows and community events, sell raffle tickets in shopping centres and tin rattle seeking donations in pubs and clubs. Operating expense of this Organisation exceed $400,000 per annum.
The members of VMR Southport are very proud of their Organisation and the benefit it provides to the community.
